How to choose web hosting

  • Compare the renewal price, not the first-term deal. Most hosts advertise a discounted first term, often 12 to 36 months paid upfront, then renew at a much higher price.
  • Check what the plan is measured by. Managed hosts usually limit monthly visits or bandwidth and charge for going over; shared hosts limit sites and storage.
  • Make sure backups and staging are included. Daily backups and a staging site to test changes save you when an update breaks something.
  • Ask about migrations. Moving an existing site can be free, included once, or a paid extra.
  • Pick a data centre near your customers. Server location affects how fast your site loads for the people you sell to.
