Privacy policy

Last updated: 26 October 2026

This policy explains what personal information The Software Ninja (thesoftwareninja.net) collects, why, and what you can do about it. The site is run by Gary in South Africa, and I handle personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

What I collect

When you sign up for my emails

If you request my free checklist or subscribe to updates, I collect your email address and, if you give it, your first name. I use these only to send you what you asked for and occasional emails about new reviews and recommendations. Every email has an unsubscribe link. My email list is stored with MailerLite, which processes it on my behalf.

When you browse the site

I use Google Analytics to understand how people use the site, such as which pages are read and where visitors come from. Google Analytics uses cookies and collects information like your approximate location, device and browser. It doesn’t tell me who you are.

When you click through to a software company

Links to software websites take you off this site, and that company’s own privacy policy applies from then on. I record that a link was clicked and from which page, but not who clicked it.

When you email me

If you contact me, I keep your message and email address so I can reply and refer back to our conversation.

What I don’t do

  • I don’t sell your personal information.
  • I don’t share your email address with the software companies I review.
  • I don’t send you emails you didn’t sign up for.

How long I keep it

I keep your email address until you unsubscribe or ask me to delete it. Analytics data is kept according to Google Analytics retention settings. Emails you send me are kept for as long as they’re useful for answering you.

Your rights

Under POPIA you can ask me what personal information I hold about you, ask me to correct or delete it, and object to me using it. To do any of these, email me at gary@thesoftwareninja.net. If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.

Cookies

Cookies on this site come from Google Analytics. Software websites you click through to may set their own cookies under their own policies. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the site will still work.

Changes to this policy

If I change how I handle your information, I’ll update this page and the date at the top.
